Chances are high, that the crew gets killed. Most likely, the mortar would hit the equipment basket and the crew would be pissed that their kit and food got blown up, but that's about it.ĭepends on the hit location and type of ammunition, but in general tanks are not meant to survive mortar hits. Mortar rounds are designed to suppress and kill infantry, they are primarily concussive force and fragmentation weapons, something that is nigh useless against modern armor. Likewise, the US Army really cares about crew survivability, and has since the Sherman, so the Abrams has many features to make sure the crew is both well protected and can quickly and safely ditch if need be. It's probably the best protected tank out there today. The Abrams is built to be extremely survivable. I don't think a standard mortar round would even have enough "umph" to blow a track. It wouldn't do anything if it hit the front of the tank. If it hit the rear deck it could maybe, possibly, damage the engine, but that's about it. The HE would do jack against the turret, it could maybe mess up the CROWS system. ![]() A direct hit, from an 81mm mortar (just a general size for a mortar) with the standard HE round wouldn't really do much.
